Who qualifies for the influenza vaccine FREE OF CHARGE?

1. People at high risk of complications from influenza
  • People 65 years of age or older
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • Adults (including pregnant women) and children with chronic health conditions.
  • Children and adolescents (age 6 months to 18 years) on long term aspirin therapy
  • Adults who are morbidly obese (BMI is 40 or more)
  • Aboriginal people
  • Healthy children age 6 to 23 months
  • Pregnant women who will be in their third trimester during the influenza season
  • Inmates
  • People working with live poultry

    2. People capable of transmitting influenza to those at high risk
  • All healthcare workers
  • Personnel and household contacts (including children) of people at high risk
  • Crew on ships
  • Household contacts and those providing regular child care to children age 0 to 23 months
  • Those providing regular child care to children age 0 to 23 months.

    3. People who provide essential community services:
  • First responders: police, fire fighters, ambulance
  • Corrections officers

    ALL CHILDREN LESS THAN 9 YEARS OF AGE WHO ARE RECEIVING THE VACCINE FOR THE FIRST TIME SHOULD RECEIVE TWO DOSES ONE MONTH APART.

    Who should NOT get the flu shot?
    1. Anyone who has known severe reactions to eggs or to a previous dose of influenza vaccines.
    2. Anyone who has a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome within 8 weeks following a previous dose of influenza vaccine.

    What influenza viruses will be circulating this season?
    This year, we expect a usual influenza season, with A/H3N2, A/H1N1 and B influenza viruses circulating.

    What is contained in this year's flu vaccine?

    This season's influenza vaccine contains:
  • A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus
  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus
  • B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like virus (Victorian lineage)

    Is the publicly funded flu shot safe in pregnancy?

    The vaccines which are publicly funded are Fluviral (R) and Fluad (R) .FLUVIRAL IS SAFE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN DURING ANY STAGE OF PREGNANCY.

    What is different this year?

    Seniors who are 75 years of age or greater and all those living in a long term care facility will receive a new adjuvanted influenza vaccine (Fluad(R)).

    Can the flu shot cause influenza?

    Both vaccines are split virus vaccines and contain no live virus. They cannot cause influenza.

    What about the intranasal flu vaccine?

    Flumist (R) is the only live attenuated influenza vaccine which is administered as an intranasal spray and is approve for people 2-59 years of age. It is available on the private market.

    What other vaccines are available on the private market?

    Influvac (R) , Agriflu (R) , and Intanza (R)
    Intanza (R) is the new intradermal formulation approved in Canada for persons 18-59 years of age.
